Pronouncing final -S/-ES



Final -s and –es have three different pronunciations: [s], [z] and [ez].
  • Final –s is pronounced [s] after voiceless sounds.
  • Final –s is pronounced [z] after voiced sounds, and all vowel sounds.
  • Final –s and –es are pronounced [ez] after: -sh, -ch, -s, -z and –ge/ dge sounds.
    [ez] adds a whole syllable to a noun (plural noun mainly)
