Itroduction

If we're on our PC at work which is connected to an Ethernet LAN or to a WAN ( Wide Area Network) or to the internet, we are then networked. We can, for example, browse through web pages or send emails. Behind these simple applications, there are plenty of things we should know in terms of networking to understand how these things work: How to set an IP Address, what is about a netmask or a subnet, how many machines can we set on a segment relating to a certain network class we are assigned from an ISP and then from the upper authority IANA.

As concerns the associated protocols, it is also interesting to have ideas on their meanings such as TCP, ARP and the like.

Finally, knowledge about the related hardware such as router, hub, cabling, or modems helps to master certain issues.
